{"id":3530,"date":"2021-06-29T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/srpnet.wpengine.com\/?p=3530"},"modified":"2024-09-23T08:53:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T15:53:48","slug":"electricity-101-how-the-grid-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/electricity-101-how-the-grid-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Electricity 101: How the Arizona grid works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"670\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/how-the-power-grid-works-arizona.gif?resize=670%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Animation of power moving from power plants, solar panels and wind turbines into transformers and power lines to provide energy to homes and businesses\" class=\"wp-image-3533\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How&nbsp;the&nbsp;Arizona&nbsp;grid&nbsp;fits in&nbsp;and how SRP is&nbsp;modernizing&nbsp;our infrastructure for residents and&nbsp;businesses<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent power grid failure events in the U.S.&nbsp;have Arizona residents wondering if we are at risk of facing similar challenges.&nbsp;Up until recently, it&nbsp;probably wasn\u2019t&nbsp;top-of-mind to think about your state\u2019s power grid and&nbsp;whether&nbsp;your power provider&nbsp;has&nbsp;plans in&nbsp;place&nbsp;for catastrophic events.&nbsp;Much like the air we breathe, power is just&nbsp;supposed to&nbsp;be&nbsp;there&nbsp;every time you flip a switch or plug something in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in reality, the&nbsp;electrical grid is a highly complex system made up of power generating stations, transmission lines, substations, transformers, power lines and infrastructure that deliver electricity to homes, businesses and&nbsp;industries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/energy-efficiency-reduce-grid-demand\/\">Providing reliable power<\/a> for current customers while <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/future-arizonas-power-grid-technology-energy-efficiency\/\">expanding the grid<\/a> and keeping power low-cost and reliable is a delicate balance to strike, but one we\u2019re committed to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Arizona fits into the power grid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the U.S. has three major grids:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Western Interconnection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Eastern Interconnection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Electric Reliability Council of Texas<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona belongs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Interconnection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Western Interconnection<\/a>, which serves over 80 million people, spans more than 1.8 million square miles and includes approximately 136,000 miles of transmission lines. It connects 14 U.S. states, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, and the northern portion of Baja California in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the electric grid works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The combined U.S. grid is the largest interconnected machine on the planet, but getting electricity into your home can be broken down into three key steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Generation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Electricity starts at a generator, which can be powered by burning fossil fuels, running wind turbines, capturing the sun\u2019s energy via solar panels, collecting water energy in hydroelectric dams or harnessing it from nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transmission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After power is generated, it moves into a transmission substation that uses a transformer to \u201cstep up\u201d (or increase) the power to extremely high voltages for transmission across long distances. Those very large power lines you see are transmission lines. This power is then stepped down (or decreased) at a transformer in a substation closer to your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distribution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From the substation, electricity travels through wires, either through overhead or underground lines, before being stepped down again via a small transformer attached to the pole or on the ground. If your lines are underground, you or one of your neighbors might even have one of these little transformers in your yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, you can use this power to light your home, prepare your meals, keep yourself cool during those hot Arizona days, binge-watch your favorite shows and maybe even power your <a href=\"https:\/\/srpnet.com\/electric\/home\/cars\/start.aspx\">electric car<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evolution of the grid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you might expect, the same grid that was designed to simply keep the lights on in the early to mid-1900s isn\u2019t optimal for today\u2019s growing energy needs.
