{"id":6297,"date":"2020-11-09T15:34:42","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T15:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/?p=6297"},"modified":"2024-09-19T11:49:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T18:49:37","slug":"hydropower-clean-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/hydropower-clean-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydropower 101: More than a century of clean energy in the Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHydropower\u201d&nbsp;sounds like&nbsp;what&nbsp;a superhero would use to save the day.&nbsp;You&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;find it in any comic books&nbsp;though.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, we happen to think that it is a superpower.&nbsp;Since the early 1900s, Hydropower has produced clean energy for the Valley.&nbsp;So, what is it exactly?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Did you know that the word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/hydro-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;hydro&#8221; means water in Greek<\/a> ?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hydropower is capturing and controlling&nbsp;the power of water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, hydropower is&nbsp;the term used for&nbsp;electricity&nbsp;that is&nbsp;produced from the energy of moving water.&nbsp;Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/water\/how-hydropower-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how it works :<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Power plants called hydroelectric facilities&nbsp;capture water from lakes and reservoirs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water&nbsp;flows&nbsp;into a turbine,&nbsp;causing&nbsp;it to spin.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The turbine activates a generator that converts&nbsp;its&nbsp;energy into electricity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electricity is transferred&nbsp;into&nbsp;the&nbsp;grid&nbsp;and&nbsp;then used in&nbsp;homes and businesses around the Valley.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>SRP operates\u202fseveral&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/default.aspx\">dams&nbsp;that produce hydropower<\/a>,&nbsp;including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/cragin.aspx\">C.C. Cragin Dam<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/canals\/history.aspx#crosscut_canals\">Crosscut Hydroelectric Plant<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/canals\/history.aspx#south_canal\">South Consolidated Hydroelectric Unit<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/canals\/azfalls.aspx\">Arizona Falls<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/grid-water-management\/water-recreation\/canal-trails\/arizona-falls\">take a virtual tour<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/roosevelt.aspx\">Roosevelt Dam<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/horsemesa.aspx\">Horse Mesa Dam<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/mormon.aspx\">Mormon Flat Dam<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/stewart.aspx\">Stewart Mountain Dam<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water flows to meet&nbsp;the Valley\u2019s&nbsp;energy demands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you&nbsp;ever visited the&nbsp;Salt River&nbsp;lakes&nbsp;and seen&nbsp;the&nbsp;changing water levels? If so,&nbsp;you have seen hydropower in action.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pump-back technology&nbsp;moves&nbsp;water&nbsp;upstream from&nbsp;the lower lakes&nbsp;to the upper lakes on the Salt River&nbsp;causing water levels to change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When electricity demand is at its highest&nbsp;in the Valley,&nbsp;we release&nbsp;a dam\u2019s reservoir&nbsp;water&nbsp;to&nbsp;refill&nbsp;the lower lakes.&nbsp;The moving water&nbsp;generates&nbsp;up to&nbsp;217 megawatts of carbon-free energy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.srpnet.com\/srp-customers-set-records-for-energy-demand-over-weekend\/\">powering around 48,825 homes<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hydropower is&nbsp;one&nbsp;of the cleanest sources of energy for the Valley,&nbsp;and it makes&nbsp;up 49% of our clean energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, it\u2019s&nbsp;also one of the oldest&nbsp;sources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?resize=1024%2C538&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Horse Mesa Dam. \" class=\"wp-image-6321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?resize=1024%2C538&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?resize=768%2C403&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?resize=560%2C294&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.srpnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HorseMesaDam.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hydropower is a clean and historic energy source<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SRP first delivered hydropower to the Valley&nbsp;in the early 1900s.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first hydropower was generated at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.srpnet.com\/water\/dams\/rooseveltenergy.aspx\">presa Theodore Roosevelt<\/a>&nbsp;in March 1906 on a trial basis.&nbsp;Only three months later, the dam&#8217;s power plant began running 24 hours a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>SRP began delivering hydropower to the Valley on a permanent basis on Oct. 1, 1909.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Miles of power cable were strung&nbsp;throughout&nbsp;Arizona&nbsp;and three more dams were built by 1928:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stewart Mountain Dam on Saguaro Lake&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mormon Flat Dam on Canyon Lake&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horse Mesa Dam on Apache Lake&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These new sources of power helped&nbsp;expand the state\u2019s mining industry, bring&nbsp;more residents to Arizona, and pave&nbsp;the way for sustainable&nbsp;water use&nbsp;in the Valley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Powering businesses, homes&nbsp;and&nbsp;water conservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we are&nbsp;one of the largest water suppliers in Arizona.&nbsp;We&nbsp;deliver&nbsp;more than 244 billion gallons of water to the Valley each year.&nbsp;We also&nbsp;manage a 13,000-square-mile watershed that includes an extensive system of reservoirs, wells, canals&nbsp;and irrigation laterals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Producing hydropower&nbsp;helps us get double the use out of&nbsp;our valuable water supply.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After&nbsp;we use&nbsp;the water&nbsp;to&nbsp;produce&nbsp;power, we release&nbsp;it&nbsp;to farms,&nbsp;businesses&nbsp;and homes around the Valley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-call-to-action uagb-block-11407c4c wp-block-button\"><div class=\"uagb-cta__wrap\"><h3 class=\"uagb-cta__title\">The future of hydropower in the Valley<\/h3><p class=\"uagb-cta__desc\">Learn more about hydropower, where your water comes from and how we plan for future needs.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"uagb-cta__buttons\"><a href=\"https:\/\/srpnet.com\/water\/arizona-water.aspx\" class=\"uagb-cta__button-link-wrapper wp-block-button__link\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">M\u00c1S INFORMACI\u00d3N<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the early 1900s, Hydropower has produced clean energy for the Valley.
