Did you know that the same snow can also help predict the future when taken with the right camera?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s called SRP Snowtography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are beautiful, snowy pictures captured with this camera, but it reveals how much water will run off into reservoirs each spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is SRP Snowtography?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowtography is the name of the camera invented by SRP engineers. It&#8217;s designed to help us continue to provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/srpnet.com\/water\/resource-management.aspx\">resilient water supply<\/a> to the Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowtography cameras are located at elevation levels between 4,000 and 8,000 feet, essentially between Camp Verde and Flagstaff. They also use nearby gauges for rain and snow to plan how much water may run off from each snowfall event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information gives us a better understanding of how much water will fill our reservoirs each spring. This is how we can predict the Valley\u2019s future water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did SRP develop Snowtography?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We developed a camera to monitor the watershed and manage the water supply. It\u2019s like the camera we used in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watershedconnection.com\/projects\/flowtography.aspx\">2017 SRP Flowtography<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> project<\/a> which you can learn more about here (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/snowtography-phoenix-snow-camera\/\">Snowtography de SRP (en ingl\u00e9s)<\/a>) that helped us better understand the behavior of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Streams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snow accumulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watershed conditions across Arizona<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowtography&nbsp;helps us understand the nuances of where our water comes from. Additionally, it shows how that area changes over time so we can adapt&nbsp;our&nbsp;water management and planning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SRP Snowtography equipment was created to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low cost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar-powered<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-contained<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Theft-&nbsp;and vandalism-resistant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Snowtography season?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowtography records year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does Snowtography take pictures year-round?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowtography takes pictures year-round so our team can study how the environment and climate are changing in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Snowtography cameras are set up at locations where both pine trees and juniper trees grow. To keep track of an area&#8217;s overall seasonal health, changes in the trees and plants are recorded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see how the water flow changes over time, we compare images from each year.
