Four years of intensive education and on-the-job training, totaling 8,000 hours, go into an apprenticeship \u2014 and that\u2019s after earning a spot in the competitive application process.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 14 available trades at SRP include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Automotive technician&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cable splicer&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construction and maintenance worker&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control C&amp;M technician&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distribution system operator&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial coater&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lineworker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machinist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metal fabricator&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meterman&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant electrician&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant mechanic &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relay technician&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the four years comes the coveted\u202fjourneyworker\u202fcard and the opportunity to take the next step in your skilled trade career.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Debbie C., a Working Foreman in SRP\u2019s Metering group,\u202fcan attest to, earning this card can be a smart move for women.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A lifetime career\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Debbie began her career at SRP over 35 years ago as a clerk in the Metering department. Her colleagues, however, inspired her to go further.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBack then, we were responsible for entering all of the data for the journeymen in the field,\u201d said Debbie. \u201cApprentices would come in and record their hours for the program, and they would tell me about it, describe the trade to me. I thought it seemed interesting.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Debbie converted that interest into action and applied for an apprenticeship. She secured the coveted spot and, four years later, the\u202fjourneyworker\u202fcard that came with it.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been a journeyman for about 30 years now,\u201d said Debbie. \u201cToday I help the supervisors with the crews and make sure they have the material and information they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earn as you learn&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SRP offers a rigorous apprenticeship program that supports extensive education in our skilled trades. In these hands-on roles, employees operate the tools that are critical to build and maintain our water and power infrastructure. This career trajectory is one that SRP hopes other women will consider.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina D., Director of Talent Development, explained, \u201cIf you\u2019re a woman with interest in moving up in the trade you specialize in, an apprenticeship is a great opportunity.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina explained that the company offers education and career fairs for\u202finternal candidates who may be\u202finterested\u202fand support once they get in.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI believe that there\u2019s no better way to learn than through an apprenticeship,\u201d said Tina. \u201cYou are provided so much guidance, mentorship and fellowship through the program.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<cite>Tina D., Director of Talent Development<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A step toward the future\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting is always the hardest part, and Debbie has advice for those considering a career like hers.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have two daughters, and if they were interested in a trade, I would encourage them to just go for it,\u201d said Debbie. \u201cI would tell any woman seeking a career in the trades to research what\u2019s interesting and reach out to someone who does it. At SRP, you can do ride-alongs, for example.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debbie said that even if the idea seems intimidating, it is worth it. She describes her career as both rewarding and\u202fchallenging.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat you learn in\u202fthe apprenticeship program\u202fis something no one can take away from you,\u201d said Debbie. \u201cA trade is well-paid, and it opens many doors.
