{"id":7536,"date":"2022-10-04T10:06:03","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T17:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/?p=7536"},"modified":"2025-05-16T12:16:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T19:16:14","slug":"disability-employment-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.srpnet.com\/es\/disability-employment-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Mes del empleo para personas con discapacidad: una empleada de SRP comparte por qu\u00e9 la inclusi\u00f3n marca la diferencia (en ingl\u00e9s)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019m two dead batteries away from not being able to communicate,\u201d said Ashton W., SRP\u2019s Social Media Manager, who manages everything from marketing campaigns to customer service on the utility\u2019s platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashton \u2013 who heard the line in a recent comedy sketch \u2013 isn\u2019t talking about her laptop and cellphone. She uses hearing aids in both of her ears due to hearing impairment \u2013 a disability <a href=\"https:\/\/yourhearingnetwork.com\/the-united-states-of-hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she shares with<\/a> 48 million Americans, or about 20% of the population.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to hear their colleagues speak is something many people in today\u2019s workplace take for granted. For those experiencing deafness or hearing impairment, however, trying to understand what is being said in a meeting or by the water cooler can be a daunting or even impossible task. It can even hold some back from seeking employment.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De acuerdo con el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldeafcenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Deaf%20People%20and%20Employment%20in%20the%20United%20States_%202019%20%287.26.19%29%28ENGLISH%29%28WEB%29.pdf#:~:text=GENERAL%20EMPLOYMENT%20DATA%20The%20employment%20gap%20between%20deaf,people.%20This%20is%20an%20employment%20gap%20of%2022.5%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Deaf Center<\/a>, close to half (42.9%) of deaf people between the ages of 25 and 64 are not working or looking for work. In a time where job opportunities are plentiful, this gap seems like an opportunity \u2013 if companies are willing to invest in inclusive workspaces and hiring practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Awareness, advocacy key to advancing inclusive workplaces&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As businesses around the world traded cubicles for home offices during the pandemic, Ashton found herself thriving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am tech-savvy, working in my position, and a lot of what I do I can do virtually,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She realized quickly, however, that virtual meetings weren\u2019t quite as seamless. Co-workers using only their laptop microphones, instead of headsets, were exceedingly difficult for Ashton to hear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recognized that I needed to have the devices to help me hear better,\u201d she said. \u201cLuckily, SRP made the resources I need available quickly, and I\u2019m grateful for that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience also inspired her. When a colleague reached out to say they were launching a new Employee Resource Group (ERG) to advocate for those with disabilities in the workplace, Ashton was excited to help.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employee Resource Groups advocate, offer support for workers who have disabilities&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re working in corporate America, and especially when it comes to disabilities that are invisible, you can\u2019t always see things like my hearing aid,\u201d said Ashton. \u201cIt\u2019s important to talk about these things so people can be cognizant of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, as SRP employees like herself returned to the workplace in a hybrid environment, she quickly realized that advocacy would again be necessary to ensure inclusive spaces. When some colleagues were in a conference room with her and she was working remotely from home, for example, she started having trouble hearing them due to the acoustics.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do not personally feel limited by my disability at work,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut part of that is making my coworkers aware. Asking someone to repeat themselves, for example. I felt comfortable sharing my experience and how others could better accommodate me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others, she knows, don\u2019t feel the same, and in the new Abled and Disabled Allies Partnering Together (A.D.A.P.T.) ERG, she has found a way to use her voice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a lot of fears and anxieties about SRP\u2019s ability to be accommodating in hybrid. So it was important to me to be a voice of employees, bring up concerns to management, and think about how the hybrid settings work,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expanding beyond experiences to create inclusive spaces&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>She found a receptive audience and realized that her involvement could have an impact beyond even her own disability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA.D.A.P.T. is unique because we have such a variation in disabilities. It\u2019s almost difficult because we want to be very inclusive,\u201d she said. \u201cSo we brought in our nonprofit partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/ability360.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ability 360,<\/a> to one of our ERG events to discuss the many unique communities within the disability community &#8212; and even the various perspectives within them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Events like that one, and ongoing communication about disability to her SRP colleagues, are what Ashton says Disability Employment Awareness Month is all about.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because while Ashton herself has found a career and an employer that works with her disability, she says that every business must do more to ensure those like her feel included.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone knows someone in the workplace with a disability,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that means there\u2019s different etiquette and mannerisms you need to be cognizant of in the workplace. Everyone is there to get the job done, but it\u2019s important to be as inclusive as possible.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-call-to-action uagb-block-7ae6cf86
