Holiday electric safety may not always be top of mind during the most wonderful time of the year. But we want you to shine brightly (and safely) this holiday season.
For instance, checking your cords for wear and tear or powering down decorations and lights before you go to bed are two ways to safely enjoy the season.
Every year, holiday décor pops up in neighborhoods across the Valley earlier and earlier. Some begin putting up light displays as early as August for Halloween, followed shortly by Christmas lights. Aside from ladder and fire safety, there are ways to ensure our electrical décor doesn’t become a fire hazard.
If you’re an irrigation customer, do not set up lighting or electrical cords in irrigated areas.
In the spirit of celebrating the festive season, SRP has a few tips and a quiz to help you make the most of the holiday season — safely.
A few holiday electric safety tips:
- Always power down lights and electronics before going to bed. Lighting timers are a great way to set it and forget it when it comes to lights. Answer the quiz questions below for your chance to win a smart plug from SRP Marketplace.
- Depending on how you store your décor, extreme heat from the summers can take a toll on cords, surge protectors and lighting elements. Always be sure to inspect your décor for signs of wear and replace any broken, cracked or missing bulbs.
- With new décor, it’s helpful to check the voltage needed to avoid overloading surge protectors and extension cords.
