Whether you’re decking the halls of your business or sprucing up your storefront, decorating safely protects your property, your team and your customers. So before you untangle those twinkling lights, here are some safety tips to keep spirits high and hazards low.
Before you plug in
- Uncoil extension cords completely before use and opt for surge protectors instead of power strips.
- Don’t overload outlets or extension cords. Too many connections can overheat and spark.
Inspect to protect
- Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, loose connections or frayed wires.
- Only use lights and décor that have been tested for safety. They should have the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label, which means the item has passed quality and safety testing.
Areas to avoid
- Don’t block fire exits and walkways with decorations or trees. Emergency access should remain clear at all times.
- Keep decorations away from heat sources such as open flames, including candles, fireplaces and kitchens, as well as out from underfoot of high traffic walkways.
Power down
- Add automatic timers for your indoor and outdoor décor to prevent lights from staying on overnight. Not only is this energy efficient, but it also minimizes fire risk.
- Before you leave the building for the day, make sure all tree lights and outdoor lighting are turned off and unplugged.
