Being green just got a little easier thanks to SRP’s Sustainable Energy Offering. With this program, more companies in Arizona can invest in and use energy from the sun, while adding more solar power to Arizona’s grid.
This is part of SRP’s promise to deliver more clean energy to our customers. It’s also part of our work to help keep Arizona, and the planet, healthy.
SRP recently announced its second phase of the Sustainable Energy Offering, adding 21 more eco-minded businesses, schools and municipalities to an existing 12. That means that as of today, 33 commercial, or large-sized customers, have agreed to power their operations with clean energy from the sun.
Through this program and by working closely with these commercial customers, these investments help us add more solar capacity to our grid, which in turn adds more solar power to our overall energy mix.
SRP plans to cut carbon emissions by more than 60% by 2035 and by 90% by 2050.
4 reasons why solar matters
Getting energy from the sun has some big benefits. For instance, solar energy:
- Helps us use less coal and natural gas for power. That’s good news for Arizona and the planet.
- Generates energy at a low cost, keeping customer rates low.
- Protects our customers from the price swings that come with worldwide energy markets.
- Is a clean, unlimited power source. That means it won’t hurt the environment and we don’t have to worry about running out of it.
How does solar energy help the Earth?
Solar energy is pollution-free — it helps keep Arizona clean and green. Using solar energy reduces carbon pollution, which adds to global warming.
Combined, the 33 SRP commercial customers who have already signed up will receive about 300 megawatts (MW) of solar energy. This will cut carbon pollution in Arizona by 1.6 million tons.
1.6 million tons is is the same as taking more than 300,000 cars off the road for a year!
How does solar energy help lower energy costs?
Whether you’re a business or a family, energy costs can make up a big part of your monthly expenses. Green energy sources like solar help fight rising power prices.
Green energy also protects against the price spikes that we see with coal or natural gas. Both ways can help Arizona businesses, and all SRP customers, save.
Where will the solar energy come from?
SRP has long-term agreements in place to purchase power from solar plants that are now being built right here in Arizona.
For example, the Central Line Solar project is a 100 MW plant being built in Eloy. In 2021, the plant will help to power Arizona businesses and brighten the future for the communities we serve.
