When SRP customer Rick von Wiegen III won a football signed by Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, he knew had the perfect spot for it.
“I have an entire room dedicated to Valley sports, so I put the ball in there with the rest of my (signed footballs),” said von Wiegen, who was born in Mesa and now lives in Queen Creek. “I now have signed balls from P2 (Peterson), Tyrann Mathieu and Roy Green.”
Von Wiegen, who loves the outdoors, was one of many SRP customers who signed up for the Trees for Change program during the Arizona Cardinals regular season and was entered for a chance to win autographed gear from the team. The diehard Arizona Cardinals fan was one of three SRP customers who won a Peterson-signed football.
Customers who join SRP Trees for Change and donate as little as $3 a month, provide critical funding for tree-planting and other restoration projects around the state that help sustain healthy forests and safeguard the Valley’s watersheds.
SRP matches each donated dollar up to $200,000 annually – with 100 percent of the funds used to help sustain healthy forests and safeguard the Salt and Verde river watersheds.
Together with SRP customers and the National Forest Foundation, SRP has planted more than 1.2 million trees on more than 5,000 acres of forest land. And, those trees do more than add to the beauty of our forests. During their lifetime, the trees also remove carbon dioxide from the air, store carbon in plant tissues and produce oxygen, thereby helping to decrease the impacts of climate change.
The SRP Trees for Touchdowns, part of the Trees for Change campaign, also funded the planting of an additional 2,900 Ponderosa Pine trees to celebrate the 29 Cardinals touchdowns scored this season.
So, here’s a big shoutout to the Arizona Cardinals organization and SRP customers such as von Wiegen who have been great partners in our mission to help restore Arizona’s forests to their natural beauty. More than 1.2 million Ponderosa Pine seedlings have been planted through this program, and we thank the Cardinals and their fans for their partnership to help us plant thousands more.
