Turning despair into hope: How SRP and community partners support Valley families

Each year, SRP partners with dozens of community organizations across the Valley to serve our most vulnerable.

The stories are many, yet each is unique. Together, they reveal a shared commitment to serving our community.

Our partners’ stories

Anna, coordinator at the City of Phoenix, tells the story of an SRP customer who needed assistance with his utility bill after adopting his nephew. The customer called SRP, where our care team referred him to a case worker on Anna’s team. While he initially only requested utility assistance, he was relieved to receive the help he needed as well as a water bill payment, diapers, food benefits and even a property tax exemption which ultimately reduced his monthly mortgage payment.

“It’s one story of many, but it shows how important our partnership is.”
Anna Vasquez, Human Services Program Coordinator, City of Phoenix

Michele, manager at the Salvation Army, tells the story of a woman who was living in her car with her two dogs. Her team was able to temporarily place her in a hotel until she was able to move into housing. They also paid her first month’s rent, started her electric service with SRP and paid her first electric bill.

“That’s totally gratifying when we’re able to help with all three of our programs.”
Michele Kirkpatrick, Emergency Assistance Program & Homeless Outreach Manager, Salvation Army

Each person’s case is unique, and resources, eligibility and funding are limited and subject to change.

Our customers’ stories

Elizabeth, a single mother of three, reached out to SRP when she started having a hard time affording medical bills, utility bills and food for her family. We referred Elizabeth to Community Action Human Resources Agency (CAHRA). Our partners at CAHRA performed an energy assessment and assisted with Elizabeth’s application for the Weatherization Assistance Program, which helped complete repairs and energy efficient upgrades to her home, which significantly lowered her electric bill.

“I couldn’t have asked for more. It made me feel like I was somebody — that I mattered. I don’t have to live day to day. They made me feel like I had a future.”
Elizabeth, Apache Junction resident

Juan, an SRP customer with diabetes, noticed his air conditioner started to go out as it was not cooling his home well and his electric bill suddenly increased from $250 to $700 per month. He was concerned that he wouldn’t be able to afford his bills or a new AC unit since he wasn’t able to work as much due to his condition. He was also scared that if his AC did go out completely, he wouldn’t be able to care for his grandson on the weekends since it wouldn’t be safe for the young boy to be at the house without air conditioning. Juan called SRP and we connected him with the Salvation Army, who helped pay a portion of his bill.

“I’m so grateful to SRP for helping me and for connecting me to the Salvation Army, to the organizations that helped me. And I thank them so much for all that help.”
Juan, Phoenix resident
