The SRP Presidents’ Volunteer Spirit Awards started in 1982. These awards are given to employees and retirees who exemplify the importance of volunteerism at SRP. The recipients of this award are outstanding examples of the power of caring, and their volunteer spirit helps strengthen the community-centered culture here at SRP.
A legacy of leadership at SRP
The Presidents’ Volunteer Spirit Karl F. Abel Award is a tribute to the former SRP president who exemplified servant leadership through his volunteer work. Karl Abel truly embodied the spirit of volunteerism at SRP, working with organizations such as the Salvation Army and John C. Lincoln Hospital.
He left a lasting impression on those he knew and worked with. Bob Amos, the Deputy General Manager under Abel, had this to say about him: “I have never been associated with anyone who had more innate, natural and genuine empathy for people than Karl Abel.”
The Karl F. Abel Award honors volunteers who donate their time to a variety of organizations across the Valley, just like Abel did.
This award, along with the SRP Presidents’ Volunteer Spirit Award, continues to be given to employees who exemplify the importance of volunteerism at SRP. It serves as a fitting legacy for a man who was a member of 25 different state and community organizations at the time of his retirement.
We’re grateful for the impactful and inspiring employees at SRP who carry on the legacy of lifting up the community.
