Sensory Friendly ZooLights Nights

One big goal for the Zoo is to make the ZooLights event accessible for everyone. That’s why they are offering Sensory Friendly ZooLights night on Dec. 4.

“We understand that the ZooLights experience can be overwhelming for a lot of folks for a lot of different reasons,” said Ruth Allard, Senior Vice President of Conservation Science, Learning & Engagement at the Phoenix Zoo. “So, we’ve developed a sensory-friendly experience in order to be more welcoming to folks who may be overloaded with the full sensory experience of ZooLights.”

Allard said that they take into consideration things like crowd sizes, light and music to create a welcoming experience for everyone.

She mentioned that they’ve received great feedback from the community about Sensory Friendly ZooLights nights and that “these changes have been welcomed by folks who otherwise have chosen not to come and participate in these events.”

She said Sensory Friendly ZooLights is just one example of the Zoo’s greater efforts toward inclusivity.

“It’s a core part of who we are – to be welcoming to everyone in the community. We have an active Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and we’re really looking at how we can better serve all of our community and make sure that people feel included here.”

Ruth Allard, Senior Vice President of Conservation Science

Inclusivity at SRP

SRP not only presents ZooLights, but some SRP employees are engaged with the event itself.

“SRP has the opportunity to participate by having tables there representing SRP,” said Zahra Haider, Training Analyst for Transmission and Generation Operations at SRP.

Haider is a member of the Abled and Disabled Allies Partnering Together (A.D.A.P.T.) Employee Resource Group (ERG). Through the ERG, she has the opportunity to be directly involved with local events such as ZooLights. She said events like Sensory Friendly ZooLights are incredibly important.

“Some people have sensory needs and sensory sensitivities, and not only do we need to acknowledge that, but we need to create space for that, whether that’s in the workplace or taking your family out to something like ZooLights,” said Haider. “You really want to make people feel that they can be safe in every environment, that they can be included and that they can just have fun and still participate in the same activities that everybody else is doing.”

Haider encourages everyone to make their events as inclusive as possible, and she said A.D.A.P.T. works to raise awareness and build a support system for those who either have a disability or have someone in their life who does.

“A big thing for our ERG is that we want to make people feel welcome,” said Haider. “We want to make people essentially feel like ‘We see you’ and ‘We’re here for you as a source of support’.”

    1. Hi Vanessa, thank you for the question. This year’s sponsorship looks a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During drive-through nights, attendees will receive free kaleidoscope glasses or facemasks on all other nights on behalf of SRP. We look forward to offering the BOGO deal again to our customers when it’s safe!
